These are ways on how you can avoid problems when lending money to someone:

First and foremost, get it in writing!

Second, get the borrower to put up collateral for the loan.

Third, and lastly, hire a lawyer!

but if the money to be lend is not more than 5k or 10k, 1st, 2nd and 3rd items may not be applicable.
